Palestinian disabled children share classroom with other children

Nadia Shamrock
The Movement for Peace –MPDL-, alongside its local counterpart NAMSC, works since 2007 on the improvement of quality of life and real integration of disabled refugee children.

Among all 144 children and 48 young Palestinian living on the Beka´a refugee camp in Lebanon, 70 of them are suffering some form of disability. The personalized activities of Movement for Peace attend both conditioning of their homes and daily use buildings, together with social awareness in terms of disability.

Regarding those children with different types of dysfunction, MPDL works on the implementation of special programs at schools, in order to achieve a full involvement of these children in school-activities.

Mhammad Kaddoura is one of these children. He is 11 years old and lives with a seven people family in a sober house. The only income in the family is his father´s, which owns a little shop. Due to his brain paralysis his family must adjust themselves to facilitate his daily life. Thanks to the program of endowment of materials and integration, he can go everyday to school and take part in school activities as anyone else. “He is keen and intelligent”, as his teachers recognise with a smile.

This is the first program on the zone with such characteristics, and it is nowadays the only real alternative for the development of those children whose families can not offer a proper care to disabilities due to poverty and the conflict situation.

The program is one of the activities included on the Agreement for Middle East, financed by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development, whose objective is working on peacebuilding in Middle East through strengthening the civil society.
