The actions of the Movement for Peace -MPDL- in Lebanon focus on two areas: The Bekaa Valley is a very marginalized area both by their geographical location, isolated from other populations and surrounded by mountains, and for its continued conflict situation. To this must be added the presence of military groups. These factors are embodied in a climate of extreme changes that create a disincentive for economic development. Our main beneficiaries in this enclave are the Palestinian women, who show a marked tendency to leave school. Women are perceived as a burden to the family and, therefore, in times of crisis are forced to stay home or to start work very young, so they drop out. SETTLEMENTS IN SOUTH LEBANON
Delivery of aid to refugees The Movement for Peace also works in the settlements of southern Lebanon where there are no-official Palestinian refugeec amps in which live some 12,000 people. Access to services is restricted and, consequently, they suffer a high degree of vulnerability. In these enclaves, Palestinian children with disabilities are a vulnerable group: their families find it very hard to find solutions to their difficult situation and at the same time, geographic isolation impedes access to professional support services and basic services are deficient. In order to achieve the objectives of the convention which framed the project, the Movement for Peace works directly with the beneficiaries through training, workshops and specialized rehabilitation services, as well as through direct action with their families (working on awareness and participatory learning groups) and their community (through awareness and the development of society's civil capacities). OUR ACTION
In context
Lebanon has a large Palestinian population, around 10% of the country, distributed in a total of 12 official refugee camps (run by the UNRWA) and other settlements that lack such protection. Following the 2007 clashes between the militant group Fatah al Islam and the Lebanese armed forces in the Palestinian refugee camp of Naher el-Bared, where lived around 30,000 people, the situation of the refugees is even more complicated. |
