In Jordan, the Movement for Peace -MPDL- works primarily with two groups: women vulnerable to violence, collective not receiving protection established by human rights, and Palestinian children at Baqa'a refugee camp, who live in a situation that leading to high school dropout rates. Our action is carried out on several fronts: In this country, access to natural resources, such as water, economic resources and infrastructure has further complicated due to the influx of Iraqi refugees, victims of the open conflict in their country. Their situation is very critical, since they are deprived of basic rights in the legal, social and economic fields. Our organization works to develop networks and strengthen ties between Iraqi communities and Jordanian society, to promote their integration. The Movement for Peace also works in the Baqa'a refugee camp, home to the largest concentration of Palestinians throughout Jordan; it is estimated that about 175,000 refugees are living in this area.
Women's empowerment In both cases, women are excluded from active participation in their communities because of Jordan's traditional social norms and values . Despite having signed The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on women's rights, legal and legislative framework does not guarantee their protection and freedom so they can freely enjoy their rights. Both women and civil society lack the information and skills to make full use of existing legislative and legal protection. Another vulnerable group is represented by Palestinian refugee children in Jordan, characterized by high dropout rates due to the lack of support in their environment (families, communities and schools). There is a serious lack of resources, material and human, required to identify and support children likely to drop out (or who already have). OUR ACTION
In contexto
The Palestinian group represents half of the population. Despite having acquired Jordanian citizenship, the are at an economic , social and policy disadvantage regarding the Jordanians. Iraqi refugees find themselves in the same circumstances. Jordan has become the main transit point and destination for Iraqis who have fled political repression or sectarian violence in this country. According to the UN and other international organizations, it is estimated that between 400,000 and 1 million Iraqi refugees. |
